What is it?
A unique import and export code (number) issued by Customs.

Why do I need it?
You cannot import or export goods over the value of R150 000 or more than three times a year, or make and receive payments through the bank for international import and export transactions without an import/export code.

Import export license and clearing agent

What is it?

A registration that allows you to register for your import export code and clearing agent license simultaneously.

Why do I need it?
In order to clear your own cargo or to clear cargo on behalf of another entity. This bundled service allows you to register as a clearing agent and obtain your import export code, which sets you up for more streamlined importing and exporting processes from the start.

Import and Export Licenses

Required when a registered company undergoes a name change or directors/member are added or resigned.

Registrations for transport

A registration required to act as the local representative for a foreign person or entity who wants a South African import export license. To register as an agent you or your business must already have an import export license.

Registrations for transport

Advance Payment Notification (APN) set up on e-Filing

What is it?

This set up enables users to access the Advanced Payment Notification (APN) button on their e-filing wherein they can generate their own APN codes. We will need the login details of the e-filing profile where the APN button needs to be set up.

Why do I need it?

An APN reference number is a mandatory code which needs to be provided to the foreign exchange dealer (bank or forex broker) when a payment is made, as well as to your clearing agent when they clear the goods.

This is ONLY needed for:

  • Payments for goods still to be imported – so goods that have not yet been cleared through customs.
  • Payments over R50 000.

Rebate, Drawback, Excise and Storage Warehouse Registrations

A registration which allows for rebates to be claimed from SARS Customs. A rebate is a full or partial non-payment of import duties, subject to whether imports comply to conditions of a specific rebate item.

A security (bond) submitted by a South African agent on behalf of a foreign remover of goods in bond.

A registration allowing an importer to claim a drawback. A drawback is a reimbursement of import duties that have already been paid to SARS conditional to whether the importer can prove the goods have been exported, or used in manufacturing according to a drawback item.

Registration of a dedicated, SARS controlled storage warehouse at a trader’s premises in which bonded goods, or imports on which a rebate has been granted my be stored. SARS requires storage warehouse registration for traders to keep bonded (uncleared) excisable goods on their own premises.

Registration of a premises for the controlled manufacturing of excisable goods. Excisable goods are taxable as soon as it markets ready and must therefore be monitored by SARS.

SARS permission to clear goods on behalf of other importers and exporters. Freight and clearing agents (also referred to as Customs brokers) must have this registration. Companies who offer import or export freight services would likely have a registered clearing agent on staff.
